i.e. studio is a design and research collaboration between Ian Miley and Estelle Yoon.

i.e. studio designs architecture with spreadsheets.

Estelle Yoon graduated with Distinction from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2020 where she was awarded a Faculty Design Award upon graduation. Her Master’s thesis focused on bridging digital representation and material artifact in architecture that proposes a deep building façade for an urban high-rise from a sequence of digitally generated images.

At Höweler + Yoon Architecture, Estelle has worked on a residential development project in Hainan, China, where she continued to study the material and spatial implications of an articulated building façade for both residential units and a retail podium, as well as feasibility studies for residential tower and a stone fabricator’s campus. Previously, she worked on a range of architectural projects including residential, cultural, master planning and installations and served as a summer studio instructor and a teaching assistant at Harvard GSD.
Ian Miley is currently a Design Critic and Research Associate at the GSD, as well as a Lecturer at Northeastern University College of Arts, Media and Design. His research interests lie at the intersection of algorithmic processes with material and spatial logics at the architectural and urban scale. Ian’s independent design work and collaborations engage questions of pedagogy, domesticity, representation, computation, and illusion in the history of architecture.

Ian studied architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he received a M. Arch I AP with Distinction, the James Templeton Kelley Thesis Prize, and the AIA Henry Adams Medal. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with High Honors from the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design where he was awarded the Departmental Citation. Among others, Ian has worked for the offices of Barkow Leibinger, Höweler + Yoon, and Certain Measures. Previously, Ian was the 2020-21 Irving Innovation Fellow and Teaching Associate at the GSD, as well as more recently an Instructor and Curriculum Development Lead for Harvard’s inaugural Design Discovery Virtual summer program.
